I was doing a photo session with a couple at night in our downtown area. I had the couple stand in an area that cars would drive behind them. I shot this photo about 9:25pm. I did merge two photos together. One photo had the off camera flash behind them posed. The other photo was the background with the blurry car lights. I used a Canon 5D Mark III with an 85 mm lens. My settings for the blurred backgrounds were ISO 100 with an F/12 and a 2 sec shutter speed. For the photo with just the couple and off camera flash behind them, my settings were: ISO 640 with F/2.5 and 1/60sec. For that photo I used the same camera and lens as above. This photo was shot about 9:40pm.

I think if I was to redo this image, a couple things I would change. One is I'd try to do it as a single image rather than a composite (or at least shoot the couple on location with the same settings), I think the difference in depth of field, plus the fact that you can see some of the cutout outlines around them, make it look kind of artificial. I would try some different long exposures, the light trails you have are a little awkward, especially those short headlight trails on the left. That, and having the flash that partially occupies the space between the couple's heads is kind of weird. I'd lean towards hiding it behind them entirely, but having it totally fill that space might work too.
