There's an inversion in this image. The birds equate weirdly to the swimmers, but the fact that they are in the background and in focus, in contrast to the birds, who are distinguishable but out of focus, takes a rather boring picture of two birds (who would normally be the items on display in the photograph) and makes it jarring.
