I'm not sure if this is an actual technique but I am starting to do this more and more where I blur the portrait to create a type of silhouette. This was an anniversary photo shoot at Laguna Beach.

This might work better if the background is more spectacular and the subjects are looking at it.
This is not appealing its hurting my brain looking at it.
