I had just picked up my Canon EOS 5D Mark III, so I took it out into the backyard for some practice. This is a shot of my dog, Asher. The image desperately needed some background separation, so I used a layer mask to apply a blur and re-haze the background, fading it from the bottom with the brush tool and subject selection. I dropped the exposure down and lifted the highlights back in with a brush and layer mask. I also brushed in a rim light to make him pop a bit more.
