Canon's RF lenses have been mostly quite impressive, offering top-shelf performance and image quality while pushing the boundaries of design. And though the RF lineup is filling out nicely, Canon has confirmed they have no intention of slowing down, with dozens more lenses coming in the next few years.
The news came as part of Canon's annual business outlook meeting, in which Canon indicated its plan to take the top share in the global mirrorless market, for which they indicated a strong demand among professionals and advanced amateurs. In one of the slides, Canon showed how they had expanded the RF lens lineup by eight lenses in 2021 and added the tag "expand lens lineup at same pace" over the next four years, which, of course, equates to eight lenses a year, or 32 in total.
Now, this does not mean 32 entirely new lenses. We may see some recycled designs to streamline the process and reduce costs (as we have seen already). Beyond that, I expect to see some more affordable models, particularly with a rumored APS-C body and the company's continuing commitment to affordable full frame bodies, along with some more specialized designs, such as tilt-shift models and an expanded macro lineup. Nonetheless, it's exciting to see the company continue to push ahead, and it'll certainly motivate other manufacturers to continue to compete. You can see all the presentation slides here.
