Canon May Create More Unique Lenses Like the 600mm f/11 and 800mm f/11

Canon's RF 600mm f/11 IS STM and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM lenses are some of the most interesting optics to come along in quite some time, and despite some photographers initially questioning them, as reviews have started to come out, it seems Canon has a couple of winners on their hands. In a recent interview, Canon indicated that the company may release more such lenses.

The Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM lenses are quite unique, and despite their strange designs, they seem to be gaining a lot of good press. In a recent interview with Mynavi News, Kengo Iezuka discussed their creation and the future of such designs. Of note, he mentioned that these lenses were only possible with the new RF mount due to their very narrow maximum apertures (making it exciting to see what other unique lenses might be in store). More interestingly, Iezuka indicated that a 400 f/8 STM is also a possibility. Canon already has f/2.8, f/4, and f/5.6 lenses at the 400mm focal length (though the f/5.6 version has been discontinued), so a compact and affordable f/8 lens with similarly good performance as the 600mm f/11 and 800mm f/11 would certainly be interesting. Yes, I think it is a smart move. Canon has always thrived because they were accessible to the masses while delivering the goods to pro's. They figured out how to span that chasm and appeal to both. This is a continuation of that successful mode of thinking.

As someone who primarily shoot MFT nowadays, I can appreciate this design of these lenses. While I still have a better advantage in size and weight, the Canon has the advantage in a larger sensor.

A very clever concept Canon, well done however it won't shift me away from my Nikon's delightful 300 f/4 and 500 f/5.6 lenses

Anyone who can afford those lenses wouldn't be buying the RF 800, just my thought. Personally I'd rather have the RF 100-500 than either of these RF lenses.
