Canon Patents Two Exciting New Lenses

As Canon keeps filling out their RF mount lens library, more patents of interesting and innovative lenses have continued to emerge. Two new patents recently came to light, and these lenses look like potentially fantastic options for sports and wildlife photographers.

The new patents are for supertelephoto zoom lenses with built-in teleconverters: the 200-400mm f/4 Extender 1.4x and the 200-500mm f/4 Extender 1.4x. With built-in 1.4x teleconverters, these lenses would become 280-560mm f/5.6 and 280-700mm f/5.6 lenses, respectively, with the devices activated. Beyond the extra versatility afforded by such a design, lenses with built-in teleconverters generally perform better than those with external teleconverters attached because the elements can be optically matched to maximize image quality and performance.

Of course, just because a patent is filed doesn't mean a lens will actually be brought to the market. However, the original EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x was rather popular with wildlife and sports photographers and widely respected for its performance, versatility, and image quality, so I fully expect to see an RF version of the lens at some point. That being said, such a lens will probably be rather expensive, likely exceeding $10,000.

There was also patent made for RF 70-135/2.0 by Canon.. I wish it was out in shops already

These are interesting to read about but totally out of reach for mere humans.
I want to see 150-600mm mere mortal lenses at competitive prices but still optically superior to 3rd party lenses.
Add at least 1, 8-24mm RFs lens for the R7/R10 series, and keep it inexpensive but excellent glass.
We don't need built like a tank lenses, just built to Canon FD standards which was superb but affordable.

So who buys such lenses if mere humans do not? Lizards? Aliens? Greek Gods?

I would love to see a 70-300 L f4.0 constant aperture zoom, or even a f2.8- f4.0 variable aperture version. That and an update to the 17-40 f4. (adding IS would be nice but not necessary) would make an exceptional pair of general purpose high quality lenses that could be the perfect travel/walk around kit. Priced for mere humans to be able to purchase without the requisite kidney trade in. But the 200-400 f4 with built in TC still is the dream lens. 3,7,22,34,58...27

I think that 17-40/4 is now ef 16-35/4 IS as for EF mount

Make that lens an upgrade: a 24-240 L f4.0 constant, weather sealed, sharp around the edges, etc. That's the one I'd buy immediately.

Believe it or not you can optimise an external design too.

Hey, Ziggy

What do you mean by "optimize"?

And what do you mean by "external design"?

Sorry, I missed your reply.
External = external teleconverter.
Optimise by codesigning the TC and lenses they're intended for.
