Although the Sony a9 takes direct aim at the flagship bodies of both Canon and Nikon, one of the most prominent issues has been the lack of wide-aperture super-telephoto lenses. The Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS directly addresses that need, and this great video offers a first look at it.
Coming to you from DPReview TV, this video offers a hands-on look at the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS. When the Sony a9 came out, it was a very exciting camera, as it directly challenged the Canon 1D X Mark II and Nikon D5. However, Sony had yet to release the sort of wide-aperture super-telephoto lenses that sports and wildlife photographers rely on when paired with such cameras. The 400mm f/2.8 is a staple lens for such photographers, and so, it's quite exciting to see how it can keep up with the equivalent lenses from Canon and Nikon. Two particularly exciting features are its markedly lower weight and distribution of elements that shifts its center of gravity back toward the body, helping it balance more easily with Sony's smaller cameras. Altogether, it looks like an excellent lens and an exciting step forward for the company.
