Hands-on With the Sony a7C: It Isn't Just a Budget a7

The Sony a7C is the yet another in a long list of interesting cameras we've had released in this otherwise torrid year, but how good is it?

It's been a strange year. You could be forgiven for thinking this is the apocalypse, and that the camera industry is in an apocalypse of its own. Week after week there are reports that Nikon are sliding down the rankings, Olympus is not long for this world, and overall dedicated camera sales are still in rapid decline. But then, on the other hand, I can't think of a year where we've seen a better selection of new cameras.

Sony have added to their well received a7S III with the new a7C. This more compact version of the a7 framework is immediately the smallest full frame camera with IBIS on the market and that has ever been on the market — quite the feat. It has a 24.2 megapixel, full frame Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor, 15 stops of dynamic range, flip-out touch screen, and can shoot UHD 4K at 30p. It is undoubtedly looking at catering for content creators, but for me, this is extremely attractive as a travel camera, given its form and sensor.

What do you make of it?

For me this new SONY rangefinder size FF camera is for the birds. Sony to design new series of compact lenses for such a small FF camera body? As XT FUJIFILM camera owner (looking further afield) will probably trade-in my old SONY A7 limited by 24mp sensor for new SONY A7R3. Small is beautiful...but not that small.
