Last week, Sigma announced their brand new 85mm f/1.4 lens for Sony full-frame cameras. Its predecessor was already something of a hit, but is this updated version better choice over Sony’s own FE 85mm f/1.4 GM, which costs an extra $600? Spoiler alert: one is definitely better than the other.
Sony launched its 85mm f/1.4 GM back in February 2016, and it’s been only a little more than two years than Sigma introduced its HSM version. Jared Polin puts the new DG DN through its paces and compares it directly with the Sony to see how it performs, with the promise of zooming in to 3:1 and the availability of his raw files so that you can make a decision.
If you want to see how the new DG DN version compares against its HSM predecessor, check out this video.
The Sony system isn’t exactly lacking when it comes to options for 85mm lenses; for those on a tighter budget, you can slash the price of the new Sigma in half by opting for the Samyang/Rokinon 85mm f/1.4, which is a mere $600. There’s then a raft of f/1.8 options available, including two $399 choices: the Samyang/Rokinon 85mm f/1.8, and the recently released — and recently reviewed — Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 II.
Are you surprised by Polin’s results? Will you be opting for the Sigma over the Sony? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
I just can't get behind Polin's youtube video style. I'll wait for a different video review...
He's a jerk. Like him if you want, without YouTube he'd be asking people if they would like fries with that.
Hi and Dustin Abbott are my two favorites followed by Gordon Laing!
Sigma kickin' ass. Hopefully, this becomes a trend of makin' quality small ass glass.
Thanks for the review, Jared! :)
