Who It’s For:
This lens is the definition of the all purpose lens. It’s big, it’s heavy but with a 10x zoom range, there’s very little that you’ll need to take this lens off of your camera body for. So if you don’t like carrying a bag full of lenses around and just want a single lens to cover all the way from normal to super telephoto, this is the lens for you.
What We Like:
10x Zoom Range: I actually did a double take when I first read about this lens, It’s got a massive zoom range that will allow for a huge amount of versatility in a small package.
Build Quality: while not quite on par with some of the professional offerings from Nikon and Canon, Sigma did a great job on the build quality with this lens and it should stand up to most normal conditions.
Price: The $1600 price tag of this lens makes it a bargain compared to many of it’s competitors.
What We Don’t:
Aperture: Obviously in order to make this lens affordable and not the size of the massive Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 there had to be some compromises so it’s a fairly slow lens. Don’t expect to get much low light action out of this. This also limits bokeh, which can be a problem with certain applications.
Filter Size: At 95mm the front element is too big for all but the most expensive filters.
