This has been replaced by the updated Nikon 300mm f/2.8 AF-S IF-ED VR II, but they only added a single switch and kept the optics the same.

The 300mm f/4 is for those of you who need a sharp 300mm prime lens, and don’t need extra ability to shoot in low light. So, if you need to shoots sports, but are always shooting in the middle of the day, this is the lens for you. It’s also a superb headshot lens.

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM

Who It’s For:

The Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM is Canon’s professional 300mm prime lens for sports and headshot photographers. If you absolutely need f/2.8 at 300mm, this is the lens for you, but if you shoot mostly in daylight, you might want to gravitate towards the f/4 model. This lens has been replaced by an updated version the Mk. II.

Who It’s For:

The Canon 300mm f/4L IS USM is a fantastically sharp lens that is for the photographer who needs 300mm, but doesn’t need the f/2.8 aperture. So, if you shoot sports or headshots and don’t need the extra low light abilities of the f/2.8, this is the lens for you. It’s also quite a lot cheaper.

The Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM is Canon’s professional 300mm prime lens for sports and headshot photographers. If you absolutely need f/2.8 at 300mm, this is the lens for you, but if you shoot mostly in daylight, you might want to gravitate towards the f/4 model. This is the updated version of this lens and is an incredible piece of glass.

What We Like:

Autofocus: The autofocus on this lens is very fast and super accurate

IS: Canon says you get 2 stops extra, which, while not as good as the Nikon model, is still pretty good.

This lens has been updated by the MK II version. But, if you don’t need the extra features of the newer model, you can definitely pick one of these up for a little cheaper than the new ones.

Nikon 200-400mm f/4G AF-S IF-ED VR II

Who It’s For:

This is Nikon’s longest professional zoom lens that’s a very special purpose lens for working professionals. It’s big, it’s expensive and it’s absolutely brilliant, but it’s definitely a special purpose lens so if you need it, you’ll love it, but unless you do, it’s a little overkill.

What We Like:

Range: This lens has a huge range from 200mm to 400mm that will take you from telephoto to super telephoto.
