Is the Sony a7S III Still Worth Buying in 2024?

The photography industry is a fast-moving place where your gear can come and go as the hot camera on the block in the time it takes to ship it. So, if you're looking for your next video-centric body, where should you go and does on of the kings of the space still have claim to the crown?

The Sony a7S range line has been one of Sony's most popular and a real hit with videographers the world over. I have seen very little in the way of criticism of these bodies and they have a devout following. Nevertheless, the last entry to this collection was the Sony a7S III almost exactly four years ago to the day, so is it still worth buying?

I will let Sidney Diongzon give you his stance on that specific question and I'll offer a broader commentary: we are seeing far stronger diminishing returns with camera progression in recent years. Where once upon a time the next camera in a range would offer considerable upgrades in various areas of its spec sheet, now they're incremental games — if that — and typically the addition of one desired feature. Buying a camera that isn't right on the cutting edge is no longer a potentially poor decision (if it ever truly was) and futureproofing your kit bag is far easier.

This about the A7SM3 I have also the first A7SM1 and the A7SM2. The A7SM1 came out '14, i got for the Bracketing of 5 at +/- 3EV for it was the HDR days BUT in 2015 it was found to be the best of the best for night photography and Astro Milky Way and that is when it took off. The A7 models M1 and RM1 and then the A7/R/S M1 and M2 also let you buy on camera apps today no longer available to buy but still downloadable till next year. It is a shame for all models are still selling new, that is right cameras from 2013 still selling new!
As far as for me I am a stills photographer mostly in love with Astro MW's but all A7S models are great day and night and yes 12MP's but you can print a poster size print that is great and eye watering when seen.
In 2014 you could get a book full of color photos showing all the things you could do with any one of the models BUT the A7S models, go figure when the A7SM2 came out there was no books on it let alone how to do video so it was word of mouth to each other as far as video.
I believe in reading about a cameras functions vs YouTubing and for the first A7 models except the A7S models you can get PDF's from Brian Smith web site and in color and i say try to do some things with the newer models.
Lastly as far as 12MP yes good enough for social media and you can do a poster size but todays post software you can upsize most anything if need be.
With all models of the A7S I enjoy, for myself, the videos at night pointing up at the stars and seeing the smoke trails of falling meteors with the high ISO's available.
1. My first Astro MW in a dark place
2. A bracketed 3 at +/- 1 in 2015
3.Using the digital filter app sky and foreground images combined in camera
4. Capturing a musical for the actors to use in their profiles
