Who It’s For:
This is Canon’s top of the line professional Speedlight which is for anyone who needs a ( comparably) light weight, powerful flash. It’s a little big on top of a camera, but it’s definitely worth the extra heft because this is a very versatile flash.
What We Like:
Faster Recycle Time: Compared to the older model, the 580EX, the 580EX II has a slightly faster recycle time.
Quieter: There is a distinct lack of sound when the flash is recharging. This is a huge benefit for me because that high pitched whine of other flashes drives me insane when shooting in a quiet room.
Weather Resistant: No longer are you going to blow up flashes if they’ve been left out in the rain for a few moments. I’ve never done it but I know people who have lost flashes this way.
AF-Assist Beam: This really helps to get perfect focus in dark areas.
What We Don’t:
Size: This is a very big flash, you’re going to notice it on top of your camera.
Price: at almost $500 dollars this is a very pricy flash and compared to comparable monoblock heads, doesn’t seem to be worth the price if you’re only using it for studio work. If you absolutely need the mobility and ability to work on camera, this is definitely a flash to consider.
