Canon mirrorless users have a variety of general purpose walkaround lenses available, each with a different set of specs and prices. This excellent video review takes a look at three different RF options, the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM, and the RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM.
Coming to you from Gordon Laing, this great video review takes a look at the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM, and RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM lenses. Personally, I used the EF 24-105mm f/4L as my walkaround and landscape lens for a long time, and I absolutely loved it. It was not the sharpest lens, but it was decent, and it offered a tremendously versatile zoom range (one I preferred over the common 24-70mm option), making it a ton of fun to shoot with. Since I have moved to the RF system, I have actually opted for the 24-240mm. The RF mount has allowed for better lens design, and while a superzoom will have major compromises, I'm a fan of having the extra reach. Check out the video above for Laing's full thoughts.
I haven't watched the video, but for some time ago I tried looking at how my (imaginary) ideal fullframe setup would be with an R6 (considering price, quality and weight), and my conclusion was that best standard-zoom for me would be the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM + adapter.
The RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM just seems too much of an optical compromise for me to be relevant.
But in general, a fullframe system will still become too big, heavy and expensive for me. I'll stick to APS-C.
The R6 and 24-105 STM combo is surprisingly light. Lighter than my old 80D with battery grip and EF 85mm 1.8, actually. When you're thinking about making the upgrade, I'd encourage you to at least try and get one in your hands to see how it feels!
It probably would be okay if it was only camera with standard zoom. But my usual carry-around kit has also wideangle- and tele-zoom. I would be looking for something equivalent to my 10-22mm, 15-85mm and either the EF-S 50-250mm or the EF 70-300L. Which tele I carry depends on if I plan doing telephotography, or just carry a tele in case I need it. In total my kit becomes pretty big/heavy (and expensive) if I need a fullframe wideangle zoom going down to at least 16mm and a telezoom up to 400-500mm.
Yep. This is the combo I have. The high iso ability of the R6 convinced me to forsake the f/4 version and I wanted STM anyway. Completely replaces my 6D for interior and night time flash free shooting and if it's really dark I have plenty of EF 1.8 lenses.
