Zoom Burst Fun

I've been posting some ICM shots recently but there is other fun to be had with other types of movement. These are straight from the camera. They are done with a telephoto lense by extending all the way out, in this case to 200mm, focusing, start the shutter and pulling the lense in, in this case to about 70mm. It is best on a tripod but these were freehand. These are a lot of fun. I bet this group could come up with the creative applications for this technique!!

I tried this once with people at a fourth of July event. I would find a person walking in a relatively straight line and zoom to keep them the same size in the frame while everything else blurred. I didn't get anything I liked though.

I havent taken anything I've been ga ga over but I DO think it's fun to play with the camera in unusual ways.

This is also fun to try on things like ferris wheels or round things as well as this type of image.

For example, this light sign (first image) that I saw in a old technology museum was a blast.

🤗

You can try to stack the first one and the last one ;-p

Chris - you HAVE to hate this! I'm dying to hear your commentary! 😁

"You'd probably get more steady shots if you used a tripod."

Agreed! I am usually never without one as I have quite a tremor. This day was impulsive. I'm sure anyone who saw me would have been laughing to see me trying to use a road sign, a car and a stump to steady!

I generally don't use a tripod, but I too tend to use rather unconventional alternatives. You got good results, and the only thing that matters is if it works, not if it looks good while you're doing it.

These are very cool! The no outlet is my favorite. I'm going to have to try this. Roughly how long of a shutter speed do you use?

I think I'll fill in for Chris here. For some reason I have never been a fan of zoom bursts, but I must say that these are better than most.

If you are open to more experimentation, I do think it would be interesting to see how 2 images (one zoomed, one not) might be manipulated in PS varying blend mode & opacity.

Keep experimenting and having fun.

truthfully I'm not a huge fan either but having to stay close to home is bringing out the experimenting. I'l like to try some night fairground subjects with this though. :)
