Matthew Lacy's picture

ICM on the Lake

All of the talk here of editing from the archives got me thinking. Instead of sitting down and doing more recent images, I did a three image composite of ICM I took in July. These were taken with Alan's then-recent work in mind, but I tried to give it only what appealed to my senses in the processing. Please feel free to comment or critique the image.

Great work Matthew, the layers make it look like a painting. Happy to see you are processing to suit your own tastes and not the perceived ones of others.

Question - how many shots did you take of the scene overall (estimate if appropriate)?

Thank you Alan. I actually took four shots of this scene, but the fourth ended up unnecessary to do what I wanted with it now. This was the same day I tried the Pep Ventosa, so I had more shots of the tree that day.

Thanks Matthew. The reason I ask is that the effect can be so unpredictable and highly dependent on speed of shutter/camera movement, angle etc it really is worth taking a large number.

Although I try my best to visualize what I want and predict, you never really know what you are going to end up with. As an FYI - most ICMers would take 10x that amount as it is easier to take more shots on location (to try and perfect) than to revisit.

It is a demanding technique so you have done well to get such a capture in such few attempts.

Just a tip that may help you moving forward

I think you've channelled Alan Brown perfectly here, Matthew - if I didn't know otherwise, I would be quite sure this was one of his!

Thank you very kindly Chris. You've paid me quite the compliment.

I was wondering when I'd see you pop up again Chris, great to see you back.
Hopefully you've been able to get out and shoot - would love to see more work from you.

Wow! This looks fabulous! Great tones, great layering!

Thank you very much Bruce.
