My first thought when I saw this was of the old Nessie photo. It would be neat to see this edited to further match that one.

Yes, I would agree however I think the composition would have been further improved if the duck were placed on one of the intersections of the thirds. Hope that helps...

Hello! Thanks for testing the waters (pun intended 😁). So, I don't think this works as you intended. The water is too detailed to be negative space. It is also too much of the image. A way that helped me wrap my mind around the idea of negative space is this: the negative space can be thought of as the shape around the subject that creates the outline of the subject. It is a thing of its own in the image. I know this is very philosophical but .... It is what it is. Negative space is just as much a shape in the image as the subject. When I got this, my negative space images took a leap forward. I normally don't drop images in other people's post but I hope you won't mind it here as a way to illustrate this idea. The black in this image is just as much a shape as the leaves and, without it, the leaf shape wouldn't be there. I hope this makes any sense. I mean for it to be helpful!!!

There are other ideas of negative space. I hope some others chime in with theirs.
That is the best description of negative space I've heard. I shall embrace it. Thank you!
I've heard about negative space in drawing but I never thought of it in photography but yours seem to fit the bill.
All comments were helpful. Thanks.
