Not a huge redesign but I did a slight overhaul of my website: www.danhowellphotography.com and now have two galleries of kids fashion up there, and I reorganized the rest of the pages. I was always apprehensive about being a photography jack-of-all-trades but really my specialization has always been people photography which includes fashion portrait photography. I’m comfortable with that.
The change was motivated by a marketing push back into kids fashion. I have a website dedicated to kids fashion photography and I happen to own the domain kidsfashionphotography.com but I wanted to send out an email blast which would have a web domain and my email address. Since my email address comes through my main site I thought it would be confusing to have my kids site in the link and my main site for the email.
I had two apprehensions about putting galleries of kids photography on my main site. The first being all of the advice I have heard regarding specialization versus generalization in marketing. The second was to not have any kids images on the same site that has more mature images. In the end I decided to add the kids galleries and selectively remove any mature images from my main site. It wasn't that hard because my main site has moved that direction for a while now, but I do have some popular published work from a broad variety of subjects.
Time will tell if this marketing effort will succeed.
