Don't think I ever got to Gastown but to me an alley screams dark forboding and this does not. But never mind because this is not a shot of an alley it is a shot of a woman.

The almost frontal lighting looks odd to me, because she is against a wall, so I expect the wall to darken that side of her face. Generally I am not a fan of brick walls close to the subject but in this case it is OK because of the very shallow dof and the angle of the shot, along the wall. I think that with this flat lighting I would rather see a bit more tone in her face. If she was side lit then I may be happy with the soot and whitewash approach, not sure but maybe.

I like the strong and intemate composition, the crop, the expression, the focal length, the POV but the skin tones are too bright for me and the same applies to the brighter tones behind her.

I do agree. I went a little over the top with this one (intentionally) to see how it would affect the image. I'll attach the original as a comparison.
