Hi,
My name is Kai Perkins and I am a 17 year old photographer from Las Vegas, Nevada. I have been shooting photography for 4 years now and have won various competitions, both locally and nationally. I was wondering if I could get some opinions on this portrait I did? I just recently transitioned into doing portraits because it is required for my AP class.
Thanks so much!
Very interesting shot! It definitely does what a dramatic portrait should do; grab the viewers attention and make them sit, stare, and ponder what is going on behind the expression. When I shoot this style one of my tests to see if I got it or not was to think this; if 5 people saw the image would they all walk away with a different feeling on what the expression is conveying? I think you did that here. If it were my shot, I would only adjust two things. One would be the eyes, which I would have liked if they didn't give off this "deer in the headlights" look. If not that then I would maybe have added a tear coming out of one or both of her eyes. It would definitely be a lot more striking and dramatic in an artsy sort of way. Just some random thoughts but overall very nice work and keep shooting/sharing!
Thanks so much for the tips!
You're 17. Well done. That is a good effort. The eyes are a bit "photoshopped" for my taste by which I mean black pupils and over white whites and there is generally a lack of shaddow detail / contrast suggesting under exposure. However, these are minor points and after 4 years you did good, very good.
The lipstick looks a bit contrived to me perhaps a bit less but with a bit of a more smudged effect at least in part of the image would have been better. IMHO. A very subjective view so take no notice of me if you disagree.
