Hi Prudence,

Welcome to Fstoppers :)

The first thing I notice from the second I saw the thumbnail was that overall image is very very bright. The highlights are all blown out in the background. I also see grain/noise in her hair and throughout her skin, did you use a high ISO setting?

Thank you Mike, I used ISO 100. Looking at other images by professionals I can see what you mean about the image being very very bright.

I agree the very first thing one notices is it is far too bright, by quite a long way. Don't be afraid of shade. Shadows are where the interest is.

However, and this is very good news, I don't think the highligts are blown. This is good becasue the detail in the highlights means you can darken the image to very considrable advantage. This will result in the whole image looking better and as a bonus less griany/noisy.

Thank you Ian - The image was taken of a very hot sunny afternoon in the shade hence the background was bright and the subject of interest was dark, trying to strike a balance resulted in that image. Will take all your advise into account in my next shoot.
