Michael Rothgeb's picture

Looking for feedback.

Two self portrait shots I recently took. I'm looking for any feedback. My first two weeks with off camera flash. Both images were edited it Lightroom.

The top one is wonderful, very powerful and dramatic. The use of ocf has been judged to a tee. In another group one might expect complaint about the lighting being too dramatic, the shaddows are bereft of detail/they are black black black. In this group, go for it, be a man, black is the new black, or whatever. Superb.

The bottom one is OK but leaves me cold and disinterested. The whole macco thing is not for me, so that is a personal bias, but the lighting and the wider framing and the blue white balance and the strange ultra blue eyes with the synthetic blue tape is all a bit odd, for me with my admitted biases. The blue tape seems to be the subject. However a kicker to the left of the image might have been all that is needed to lift it, well if the blues were moderated, anyway.

Thank you for your honest feedback.

I'm a complete amateur but I like the lower shot a lot. The blue tape emphasizes it's time to go to war. Your steely blue eyes says it's time to go to war and I'm confident. Your chiseled body says you're ready.
I like it.

I like this dramatic look a lot. Sometime a really interesting thing you can do is Turn the subject away from the light. So 45 degrees camera left if your light is camera right like in this picture. It will take the light away from his face and eyes but it will add a ton of drama to the shot. Just something you might try next time you are testing.

Thank you. I will try it out next time.
