I had some down time in the studio so I thought I would play around with lighting a bit. Nothing super fancy, straight on self portrait, but i would love some feedback!
Super fancy is not always needed, so no worries there. It is very difficult to shoot self-portraits and technically you have nailed this, at the basic level of; white balance, framing, focus, exposure and "Rembrandt" lighting but a bit of life, sparkle, engagement with the lens, which is so difficult to deliver especially in a self-portrait, would have made all the difference. You have avoided the trap of making it look like the ubiqitous selfie, well done.
Thanks so much for the feedback Ian! I agree fully with the lack of "sparkle" its always hard for me to shoot myself in that way but I'm working on it!
Hi Evan, great self portrait. Love the lighting. Could you please describe your lighting setup for this shot? I really enjoy practicing different styles in portraiture but I really get kind of tired of looking at my own face.
absolutely ! fist off, thanks for the comment I just joined the site and i feel very welcomed so far. the lighting set up for this photo was very simple I used a beauty dish high camera right and a soft fill from a bounce card to open up the shadows just enough to get some detail.

That would be hard for anyone, I guess.
