Brian Rodgers Jr.'s picture

Rooftop Hero

This is a ford focus hero shot that I created using only a speedlight with a softbox to light the vehicle and I composited the background using cityscapes/images I shot in various locations.

Can't say much. Wow! Very well done, Brian.

Thanks Cedric, much appreciate bro!

To think you lit that with just a speedlight/softbox. Well done. Roughly how many exposures did you make? How long did the edit take? Amazing.

My only negatives are related. Specifically, the small pools of light where the tyres touch the roof surface and seeing the tyre teads / exhaust sytem. Given the dark setting theses things do not look natural. All subtracting from the suspension of disbelief, unfortunately.

Much skill on display here. Keep it up.

Ian, I'd say it was between 10 and 20 exposures to light the vehicle. The retouch took a lot of time, primarily because I didn't have a plan. I didn't know if I was going to just leave the car as is and create studio type shot, or find a background. I ended up creating a background out of multiple photos that I had in my personal library.

As far as the wheels go, could I burn them down a bit?...sure. I wanted some separation from the pavement so I left it in. It's all personal preference of course. Alternatively I could also bring up the exposure on the ground a bit to match the tire tread brightness. But yeah, to each his own. At one point I was debating whether or not this image was even good enough to put in my portfolio. I kept going back and forth on it, then finally just decided to post it on my website and in Fstoppers.

Also, sorry for not directly responding to your thread. For some reason Fstoppers didn't have a reply button under your comment...
