Ok, so I would love some feedback on this shot I took during a shoot for Outside World Outfitters highlighting their new rain jackets. It was taken using a Canon 7d and a 50mm 1.8 using natural light.
This is a much more difficult shoot than it might appear. Weather-proof clothing should be shot in the right weather, which you have. The light in such weather is usually cold and blue, which it seems you have changed here, to match the colour of the garment. So here we have a warm looking landscape and subject in a rainy photo, which makes the garment being advetised look good in a way but does it look utterly bad-weather proof? Also, I think the cropping is odd, more like an amateur portrait, with too much headroom. Surely, more of the coat should be visible and less space above her hood?
Perhaps she should have been looking to the side, across the landscape or into your lens rather than down at who knows what.
Exposure, focus and depth of field are all fine but it just does not quite work for me, especially as an advertising shot.
I am not convinced the shot works, artistically or as an advertising shot. It is unconvincing in the colour and the atmosphere, of wet weather and wet weather apparel.
Perhaps a much bluer and darker shot with a couple, or a mum and child etc, laughing and looking as if they are having a great time, despite the weather, but because of the effective clothing, keeping them warm and dry. We would need to see more of their coats and more rain etc with the colour palette convincing us it is awful out. But still we can be comfy and happy in these coats, so buy for all the family. That might be convincing.
I think The photographic part is solid, but you could add some contrast and details in post...

Not convinced, actually. 2/10 this time.
Ian, what are you not convinced of?

Thanks for the critiqe Ian! I agree that there is too much head room. I may play with the color temp. on some of the other files.
