CC please

These are two pictures from the past summer that I like quite a bit but am not sure if it is only because I was there and have an associated memory to go along with them. Friends and family aren't much help as they like everything, so some CC is welcome (My day job is high school principal so I don't think there is anything that you could say that would hurt my feelings :) ). I've only been taking pictures for about a year now so comments on even the simplest things will be helpful.
cheers,
Tris

The lake without wildfowl, For what it is, is pefect. Technically easy perhaps but still perfect. The aetheticc is also very nice with lovely tones, colours and framing. Looks like you got one of those evenings, or was it a morning, when there was a total absence of air movement. That was lucky but you put yourself there and you shot it, well.

The other lake shot is also a good example, and very well framed too. It is a very nice photograph although it somehow feels a bit more like a picture postcard, which is not a good thing. All told two decent photographs.

Well done.

Hi Ian,
thanks for the kind words. Do you think there is anything that can be done in post processing to make the second one less "postcard" like or is it just the composition?
cheers,
Tris

Good question. I have had another look at it and have scored it 3 stars, which is in my view fare and indictes I like it quite a lot. What can I suggest to improve it? Only cropping it into a much more "widescreen" aspect ratio and so loosing quite a bit at the bottom of the frame, so it looks more cinematic rather than domestic small scale. That should help quite a bit. Another way would be to try a black and white conversion, cropped as suggested, maybe that will bring some extra magic to the photograph so elevating it from the ranks of postcard quality photos. Wil it make it a 4 star photo, maybe not quite, but close. If you do a re-crop etc, let us know and I'll reconsider.

All the best.

Hi Ian,
here is the cropped version - thoughts?
cheers,
Tris

Nearly. I think the space above the hill should be similar to the space below the reflection of the hill, in this image. I am not saying it must be identical, as the ducks need some space. Do you have a hint more sky available? Or do you have to crop off a bit more at the bottom? A hint more sky might be best for the duck-space. Maybe just a touch of both.

This is not a firm rule and is not always going to be the case, just my reading of this version of this image.

I find it very beautiful - I love the tones and the calmness :) Maybe crop a bit of the sky and put the horizonline in the upper 1/3 and a bit of the buttom - I think it'll give alot to the picture :)

Hi Mads,
I'll give the alternate crop a try and let you know how it works out.

Tris
