Photo to capture sunset and coldness of winter on the rocks at Peggy's Cove

I took this shot the other day before a storm was approaching. I wanted to capture sunset and the feeling of the cold winter temperatures.
Any thoughts would be appreciated..

Nice shot Mike. I like the warm sunset colors juxtaposed to the cool winter colors. A decent composition with the lighthouse, horizon position, and walkway. The near foreground and sky at the top of the frame are a bit typical so you could crop in a bit to make the lighthouse a bit more dominant...but that is to personal taste.
Congrats,
Mike

Thanks Michael, muchly appreciated.

That's a very good shot well executed. Can I suggest any improvements? Well that kind of depends if you like my ideas, which you may not. I was not sure what I might suggest but thought some combinations of a few ideas might be good, I played around with your image, a bit rough and ready, 2 mins maximum spent so just some casual edits to consider.

My crop is quite a bit wider than 16:9 and I have added quite heavy ND grads to the top left sky and the bottom left foreground, you may prefer more ND, or less. But essentially that is all I did.

Thanks Ian, yes that does enhance the picture, I like the crop.

As Ian has done, a slight crop to 16:9 would make this much more epic - that's all it needs, colours are great!

Thanks Dexter, very unusual to have no one out at this spot, but I got lucky with my timing. Off shore gale so the waves were not a factor. I think if I take the RAW, apply the crop, put my watermark back on it (LOL Ian) I might have to get this printed.

Nice photo! I really like contrast, but in my opinion a crowd version may be a bit more compelling. I don't think Ian's edit with the heavy ND grad is the best, maybe a very subtly used grad?

Thanks Tyler, crowds are very very common at this lighthouse, most times they take away from the shot in my opinion. Maybe 2 or 3 people would add the human component to the shot

Troubles with people in shots are manifold; unfortunate colour clothing, standing in the wrong arrangement, doing daft stuff, looking the wrong way. The list is unending. In short they would usually distract and detract from the subject. Here the light house standing as a sentry against the coming storm and the fall of night is the subject, as I see it. That's why I added the degree of ND to the image that I chose, to accent the fall of night etc when a lighthouse goes to work.

haha sorry about that! I meant to say cropped! smartphone typo!

I like lighthouses they have a feeling of loneliness and patience. My only comment would be to illuminate more the top of the lighthouse, as it gets lost. Bring back the shadows a little bit. Where I live there are no lighthouses, during my last trip to Puerto Rico I took this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/atorselli/23848088090/in/dateposted/

That's beautiful. And the weather front arived at the perfect moment. As in Mike's photograph it is the transition to things dark and dangerous that makes a lighthouse shot work best. Well done.

thanks Ian
