The top one does nothing much for me but the whiteout mountain top, that is a bit more interesting. I did however, think it a bit dull. So, I had a quick play. 2 mins and we have a different image, maybe better, maybe not. Anyway, have a look and remember to click on it.
Looks pretty good Ian! Thanks for the comment! That photo inspired me lonleiness so I thought that a high key edit would emphasise that so that is why I opted for more white not for contrast.
My thinking was two fold. 1, to create depth and so distance between the mast, and whatever it sends and or receives, and the world beyond. But also creating the very dark upper sky suggest outerspace beyond our world and our atmosphere, so smallness and loneliness, as per your thinking. Just a different approch. In fact I applied the grad to the sky before I decided to crop it. The top of the image was then very very dark. On balance I decided this crop was better but a close call and others may have decided otherwise.
