Made my first whole hearted attempt at landscape photography today. Although I did not go on a long journey to find a spectacular location, this is just a beach down the road from me.
Just received my Lee Big Stopper yesterday, also used a 2 stop ND with that to get slowed down 12 stops. Nikon D7000, Tokina 12-24mm F4, heavy sandbag from my tripod, blackout eye piece, triggered with a Vello Shutterboss. 2 minute exposure, F13, ISO 100.
Constructive criticism please!
i think its very beautiful, I'm happy you created a strong, straight horizon. good work!
Thank you! And Thanks to in-camera horizon levels!
The horizon is just about level, the sea looks good as does the sky. The composition is strong with the dark rocks forming a base for your composition and contrasting nicely with the opalescent tones of the water and sky.
But, and this is a serious problem, with that length of exposure you will never get a sharp shot of the Loch Ness monster or a mermaid, unless you have a flash, then maybe a superb artistic rendition.
Thanks! Luckily I don't live near Loch Ness! I always figured Mermaids would like tropical waters over frigid February, New Jersey North Atlantic!
This is a very well executed Landscape shot. You could hang that on your wall (; Have you tried converting it to B/W? As you don't have much color anyways.
I thought the same thing about the B&W. I posted both shots in a private FB group for professional NJ photographers and they all really seemed to like the color. Personally, I didn't expect the B&W to look as great as it does, but it turned out to have a huge amount of gray tones, almost appearing to be shot on film. I'm happy with both! Thank you!!!
Drop a grad ND filter in LR on the sky....adjust exposure, and white pont....it will turn it into a very moody image
Agree, get some more midtone contrast into the clouds and you'll have a little more pop. But now that I see the B/W I tend to prefer color as well (;
Well done long exposure shot! I would love to see it during sunset or sunrise :)
Thanks, I'll definitely be going back to this spot and wait for just the right conditions!
Matthew,
Not much crituque to add other than shoot more landscapes. This is s nice location. When you get a spectacular sunrise sky you know exactly where to go.
Mike
Thank you Michael, I'll be sure to drive out to this spot for some sunrises on my days off to see what happens!
