Michael Austin's picture

Avarua Sunset, Cook Islands

The very last picture I took in the Cook Islands. Been trying to work on general composition and being more deliberate in my landscape photos, which is kind-of a new genre for me since I usually do video stuff.

Nice light and composition!

Thanks Mark! A result maybe of more luck than skill... but I'll keep working at it!

Beautiful image, Michael! I think your deliberate approach has really paid off. The composition is excellent, a crucial point. Your processing strikes a fine balance too.I like the way that muted foreground sets off that dazzlingly beautiful sky. Makes me wish I'd been there.

Since you've posted here, I hope you appreciate some well-meant crit. The one thing I think you've left out is levelling the horizon, which is out by about 1.2 degrees. readily visible and spoiling the image for me, although some people don't seem to notice or care. Personally, I don't think the white border helps, either, but again, that's a very personal thing.

Hope to see more from you. I really like this image of yours..

Thanks Chris! Appreciate the feedback! It's funny, I never noticed the horizon before - even though I leveled my tripod I think I just assumed it was something I wouldn't have to mess with. Now that you mentioned it I do indeed see that and I have had that image as my desktop for a year and never caught it! The white border really just holds the EXIF data - I don't like it either and thought it would detract less than a watermark or something actually in the image. I do a lot of my work kind of in a vacuum, by myself, and there aren't really any others around I can bounce images off of aside from online communities like this so quality commentary is greatly appreciated!

Yes , Perfect light and composition photo

Thanks Rahul!
