Tranquility -- CC appreciated

I FINALLY got the opportunity to escape from my house and take a drive to the mountains for a few photos and some fresh air. This photo was taken along the Oconaluftee River, just north of Cherokee, NC. Unfortunately, I wasn't properly dressed to move further toward the center of the river (the moss on those rocks is very slippery, and I wasn't in the mood to go swimming. lol), but I do plan to return very soon.

I normally shoot using a landscape orientation, but decided to try something different after watching a video from Mads Iverson. How do you think this image came out? What would you have done different? What could I improve? Any CC is greatly appreciated!

Hi, Mark. Congratulations on your escape! Loving the serenity of this scene! I'm still learning the finer aspects of landscape photography from some fine photographers here. My first impression is the image is a little too dark in the shadows. I do like how the sun hits the leaf in the foreground and that seems where you want the viewer to focus. If that was your goal then I think the leaf could have a more prominent position and not be so deep in the corner if compositionally possible. As it is, my eye still can't help but be drawn towards the waterfall.

peaceful location. If your subject is the leaf in the bottom left corner then you probably should have made it more central to your shot, maybe by moving it up to the bottom third line. Maybe cropping down from the top.

yes that is tranquil. i can almost here the silence. personally the leaf looks staged and is distracting. i would crop the bottom (leaf out). love the shadows. there is a tendency for people to demonstrate the dr of their gear at the moment but i much prefer light to bright an shadows to be dark...
