Shooting at night can be difficult at first, but as is often the case, behind the difficulty lay the greatest rewards.
In an article recently I discussed some of my best tips for taking great shots of cities at night. There's something about cities after dark that just draws me in and shooting them becomes addictive. One element I didn't get into too much however, is street photography and portraiture at night. This is arguably more difficult thant landscapes as it requires and even more masterful control of settings due to the lack of light and a tripod not always being viable.
In this video Pierre Lambert takes to the streets at night to capture some stunning images using, at most, small handheld lights. Cities are a veritable feast of artificial lighting, from street lights to shop windows and advertising, which when harnessed properly, can be used to great effect. Handheld LEDs (another topic I've spoken about a lot recently) have grown so powerful that lighting on the move is no longer cumbersome or fiddly. My camera bags always have several handheld LED light bricks and they work brilliantly in a number of situations. Combine them with how clean modern cameras' images are even when using high ISO, and you have a wonderland of photo opportunities after the sun goes down.
