Just finished watching it, thats an interesting setup :)
Ive done something similar but without a filter. I just put another cloth on the softbox to get lower light and shot at ISO 50 ( not all cameras have that )

Adding diffusion is definitely another way of getting to f/1.8 without blowing things out. That shot looks beautiful! She almost looks like the girl from Twilight. :)
