This image was taken in Lava Hot Springs, ID, behind 3M Cattle Ranch inside the Portneuf River. I was in the river, water up nearly to my chest, holding my Nikon D750 and Tamron 24-70 f/2.8. My wife, Katy, was standing next to me, holding my Paul Buff Einstein strobe and Vagabond mini battery. I coaxed my dog up the river and then called for her to quickly come back. As she jumped and splashed against the current, I fired my shot, triggering the Einstein and forever freezing her in that moment.
This is a shot I'll never forget. I was terrified I'd end up ruining thousands of dollars worth of gear, but the risk was definitely worth the reward.
