Badwater Bounty

Salt-encrusted patterns spread across the salt flats of Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park. The 200 square mile basin was once the bottom of a massive inland lake, which has long since evaporated. Concentrated salts remain on the valley floor, and combination of wind, rain and the heating/cooling cycle generates the polygonal patterns, which range from a few inches to more than two feet in height.
