When Scout joined our family she was 5 months old and still very shy. She was found with her siblings next to her dead mother somewhere in a field in Spain. There were lots of situations she found intimidating. Children, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, balloons - all suspicious monsters waiting to attack. She didn’t dare to jump on things, play tug of war or take center stage in any other way.
Whenever she dared to do something she found scary, I applauded her and cheered her on. I made a lot of fuzz about it. Told her how great she is. Now, this might sound silly, but it worked. You could actually see how she grew in size and was pleasantly surprised. She’s now a very cool dog and actually quite of a real diva, not afraid of too many things. Fireworks and storms maybe.
She is a dog that would stop cooperating immediately. I always forget this as she does now everything for me or let's say for the attention, praise and, of course treats. That’s actually something I’m a bit proud of.
