I totally agree. This is actually also true for drone-videos. Mostly you see straight fly-overs. You can actually achieve wonderful shots by going just vertically, very slowly, for example by the side of a church tower going up and then revealing the whole city lying around it.
This reminds me I've been sitting on my butt too much in Binghamton. I need to get up the road to the lake.
