Toward An t-Isean

A photograph from my series Na h-Eileanan, a conceptual series of images taken in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. A branch of my family is from Scotland, and the country has always had a familial draw to me for this reason. On this particular trip, I spent a month in the country, with the intention of producing a series of night-time photographs centered around the landscape.

We spent almost the whole of the trip on the remote Isle of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, a sparsely populated island chain off the northwestern coast of the country. We were there in February. There was only six hours of daylight at this time of year. The soil is quite poor, resulting in a wind-swept and largely barren island covered in peat, rock, and mountains.

It is barren, bleak, and beautiful.
