Sweet shot! Can you share what type of lights you used? I'd love to get some lights that would allow me to shoot with a shallow DOF but in bright sun - like rock climbing in the desert (bouldering). Any thoughts on what type of set up I might consider? I have a D700, 2 PW Plus Xs, 1 FlexTT5... And thanks in advance!
Thanks dude - sorry for the late reply. My browser never seems to save cookies for this site so I never see my notifications!
This shot was 2 lights and they more than likely would've been speedlights (SB900 and 910, or maybe an 800). Either at half or full power and using the magic of Hypersync. My hypersync settings have changed a lot over time and I now only seem to be able to get workable settings with full power on the flashes but you've got the gear to do it!
I just run a MiniTt1 on my camera and Plus IIs on the flashes - I can't remember the hypersync timing off the top of my head but I feel like I might've just gone back to one of the simpler "medium" kind of settings - have a play with your flash pointed at a white wall with a small aperture and see what you can get - I can get up to at least 1/1600 with flashes at full power on my D810 and think the D3s is even better. From memory, the D700 is a pretty good hypersync performer too.
I've also seen a lot of skating guys using the Godox Witstro AD360 lately with excellent hypersync results - these are about equal to 4 speedlights and aren't too much bigger so might work for your situation too.
