To me, they look like they are confused or trying to figure out a problem. I think it's the boy's hands on his hips and lack of facial emotions from the both of them.
Maybe not possible in the realm of candid, but if one was looking at the other and the other was looking at the rocks, that would create a story that would keep a viewers eyes flowing. Right now there are two tales, instead of one flowing connection. Currently it is father looking at rocks, son looking at rocks. So what I'm suggesting is the one story be father admiring his son admiring the rocks.
There are also halos noticeable, especially around the son's head.
