The Daymark

Built in 1864 out of local limestone, The Daymark is a 24m tall hollow tower that sits high above the cliffs of Froward Point. Constructed to guide mariners to Dartmouth's notoriously hard to find harbour entrance, it is visible for many miles out to sea.

I really liked the way the light was hitting one face of this octagonal tower, adding some contrast and depth to the image, but one thing I struggled with was giving a sense of scale. I noticed a flock of birds around the base and realised they could not only add scale, but also add a dynamic element to the image. I ended up waiting for what seemed like forever in a rather awkward crouched position for them to take flight.
