Yep gels! Just taped cellophane actually. I bought a $100 smoke machine from Jaycar. You need to attached a chiller box of some kind filled the ice to cool the smoke down so it hugs the floor - there are tutorials online for doing this. :)
Your fog machine is not the easy to use type. Does it continually produce fog or just blast then it will rest for a while? At lease it use just chilled water and no chemicals.
Did you use colored gel to make the split light or it was from the post process? What di you use for the smoke?

It's continual - seems easy enough to use for me.
