I set this shot up in the dark, with a camera pointed up at the arch overhead of Arch Rock in the Valley of Fire State Park, NV. Using a flashlight from my car, I lit up the rock with frantic motions as if I was spray painting stone. I let the camera sit with the shutter open somewhere between 5-6 hours while I lay in my car, sweating in the desert heat. I wasn't aware of the Vegas lights in the distance, over 50 miles away, which ultimately painted the sky in pastels behind the star trails.
