Municipal council meeting room

Both the local council meetings and the state parliament meetings are held in the local council meeting room. You can tell who is sitting where by the name boards in front of each seat. Until Leopold Gratz's term in office, the mayor sat on the raised platform. But now his place is in the first row of seats. The local council and state parliament presidiums take their seats in the stands.
A general smoking ban now applies at all meetings. That was not always so. In the past, candles were lit at the lectern at local council meetings. As long as they were burning, you were allowed to smoke; once they went out, you were no longer allowed to smoke.
Architecture:
The Vienna City Hall was built between 1872 and 1883 and is one of many historic buildings that were built along the Ringstrasse at that time. The town hall facade is an outstanding example of a secular neo-Gothic building. The exterior, especially the 98 m high tower, is inspired by the tradition of Flemish Gothic town halls, such as the Brussels town hall on the Grand-Place/Grote Markt, in order to externally link to the medieval tradition of urban freedom. The floor plan with seven courtyards follows the concept of baroque palaces. The classification of the entire building as neo-Gothic should therefore be used with caution and was rejected by Schmidt himself. With a floor area of 19,592 m², the town hall has a total usable area of 113,000 m². The building is 152 m long and 127 m wide, with the 1,575 rooms having 2,035 windows. The construction costs were around 14 million guilders.
