The Cuevas de Mármol are located on a peninsula of solid marble bordering Lago General Carrera a remote lake that spans the Chile-Argentina border in Patagonia. The lake can be reached via the legendary Carretera Austral in Chile. The caves were formed over the last 6000 years by waves washing up against a calcium carbonate shoreline. The caves can only be visited by boat or kayak. Weather is a concern, only on calm days it is possible to get close to the caves. The true color of the limestone is actually kind of grayish but the reflections of azure glacial water provides this bluish hue.
