Where is this? What continent, what country, what mountain range?

Dolomites, Italy

Waiting to see frodo pop around the corner

Loved this photo! Very conscious use of depth of field to establish the three planes. Most likely taken with a telephoto disrespecting the minimum focusing distance of the lens to render the foreground completely out of focus, thereby giving a concerted 3D layering to the photo. The foreground would have been a “muddy mess” were it not for the three pink out-of-focus flowers. Most likely applied a good deal of digital dodging here: I suspect the photographer darkened the foreground bush on the diagonal along the bottom edge of the frame to establish parallelism with the diagonal in the mid-frame of the photo. Also, to reduce the amount of potentially distracting foreground blur and to draw one’s eye to the flowers.

I also suspect a good deal of dodging and burning was applied in the mid-ground as well both to emphasize the downhill vertical line and to enhance the mood established here. The clouds in the background provide contextual logic to the selective darkening and lightening of the field, even if there weren't any stray small clouds conveniently passing over the field when the photo was taken. :–)

The background also runs along a diagonal, but in this case in the inverse direction– following the rise of the mountain peaks. Lovely composition! Also: Very effective desaturation of the color in the background “layer” to heighten the three-dimensional effect!
