The strombolites of Hamelin Pool in Shark Bay, Western Australia are the oldest living structures on earth. The "living stones" grow about 0.020 inch per year and the largest are estimated to be thousands of years old. They grow in hyper saline, alkaline waters and can be found only in a few locations. I took this shot after sunset, but it reminded me of the beginning of life on earth, hence the title.
