Redgum

This is a branch of a River Redgum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis).

I was trying to take a backlit shot of a friend who was sitting on the riverbank fishing, about 3m (10ft) below this branch. I looked up and noticed the branch lit from below by the sun reflecting off the dry grass beneath it, and that a gum-leaf had serendipitously caught in the web.

Some people, on viewing this image, have claimed that I must have placed the leaf in the web. I'll swear I didn't: I'd have needed a ladder to do so, and that's not part of my normal camera kit, especially when I'm 500 metres away from the nearest road!

The photo was taken late 2003 on my old Canon EOS 50, on Fuji Velvia slide film, my landscape film of choice, then scanned using a Nikon Coolscan V. I have no record of the exposure details - sorry!

Very little post-processing of the scanned image - Velvia was a beautiful film, but I always exposure bracketed and this is the middle exposure. Some exposure adjustment using ACR, mild sharpening, crop and a light vignette.

Current gear: Canon EOS 5DIII, Panasonic Lumix FZ-1000 (when travelling overseas).
