The story of unsung heroes.

In Pabna, I documented efforts to preserve the Malar, Bangladesh’s largest traditional wooden boat, during the peak of monsoon season. What began as a clear afternoon quickly turned dramatic as storm clouds rolled in. Undeterred, carpenters worked steadily beneath the dark sky, seemingly at home with the elements .For eight days, these artisans had been repairing the boat’s roof—passing down skills honed over generations. But rapid urbanization is pushing many away from this heritage craft. If this trend continues, preserving such massive wooden hulls in the future will become increasingly difficult due to the declining number of craftsmen with the necessary knowledge and skills.
